French “Adbusters” Call For the Cancellation of the Formula 1 Grand Prix

The French nonprofit group Casseurs de Pub (translates as “Adbusters”) is launching a poster and a set of petition-cards to be sent to the President of France, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Youth and Sports and the Minister of Environment, demanding the cancellation of the Formula 1 Grand Prix car race. It would be held on July 1 in Magny-Cours, France. In all, there are more than 10,000 postcards that will be addressed to the four national representatives.

“Recognition of the planet’s limited ability to absorb our expansion and of the finite nature of natural resources is deepening. But this movement cannot develop itself within an incoherent framework. An event like the Formula 1 Grand Prix of France, to be held July 1, constitutes a record for useless pollution and waste. What’s more, it represents an example contestable in other areas (speed, tobacco advertising, etc.). It is no longer tolerable for a minority to promote irresponsible practices while people are increasingly demanding initiatives (to reduce emissions). Therefore we request the cancellation of this event,” writes the group to Dominique Voynet, Marie-George Buffet, Jacques Chirac and Lionel Jospin.
